Maison Mara x Malone Souliers
Maison Mara's latest coup is signing the covetable footwear label Malone Souliers to their luxury Cape Town boutique.
With no more than five seasons under its belt Malone Souliers’ bold, beautifully crafted shoes are steadily gaining a reputation thanks to Mary Alice Malone's striking, sculptural and chic designs.
"I discovered Malone Souliers about a year ago and fell in love with their style. Every single detail from the chemical-free dye to the foiled gold logo has been meticulously considered. The result is beautifully crafted shoes by a label that I believe is fashion forward and inspiring," says Maison Mara's owner, Kelly Mara Withey.
Mary Alice Malone, the labels' cofounder and creative director, is as colourful as her designs: a former US junior Olympic equestrian and art and international politics student, she turned her hand to furniture design and construction (including welding and upholstery), she found her niche in luxury footwear.
For now, Maison Mara has introduced five Malone Souliers designs. Maureen mules, available in antique rose and black, have been expertly handcrafted in Italy from supple suede and are cut low with two narrow patent-leather straps, making them ideal to wear with jeans or smarter trousers. Withey has also selected the Savannah, fantastic lace-up stilettos with four-and-a-quarter-inch rapier-like stiletto heels and a tasselled ankle tie, and the label's well-known Montana pumps with their sharply pointed toes and lace-up fronts that can be severe, sophisticated or sexy.
"Summer calls for a pair of great flats," says Withey, "so we had to get the Robyn, another of the label's bestsellers. Nappa leather, three straps and a zip at the back make for a superbly comfortable shoe."
Prices range from R7 600 (Robyn) to R11 500 (Savannah) and new designs will be available from Maison Mara at 5 Jarvis Street, Cape Town and their online store two to four times a year.
